Arts Integration connects learning in an art form with learning in another subject area. In this approach, students work toward both arts and academic goals, building knowledge and skills in each area through one holistic learning experience. The arts are not simply added to a lesson, and they are not separate from the academic content. Instead, both areas are intentionally planned, taught, and assessed together.
This approach can be a good fit when arts and academic content teachers are planning together, or when the goal is for students to demonstrate understanding in both the art form and the academic subject. Students might use theatre techniques to develop character and point of view while analyzing literature, create visual compositions that apply both design principles and math concepts, or explore rhythm and pattern through music while connecting those structures to learning in another subject.
